It all starts from within, from the inside out. That's why it's so important to develop a healthy self esteem no matter what your circumstances are. If you love yourself, you won't feel the need to put anyone down to make yourself feel better. That confidence will just radiate naturally and create a positive environment around you. It's a chain reaction, like Rachel Scott said.

I totally agree. This laziness is partly caused by burnout because many are involved in 5 or more activities. Then there’s the sense of entitlement many get after working so hard for 3 years. Many seniors think they deserve a break, but this is the most important year to prepare ourselves for life after high school, the beginnings of our adult lives. High school activities and part-time jobs are just a taste of what is to come in our young adult lives. I decided that I wouldn’t be so busy just to make my college app or resume look good. Instead, I devote my time to tougher courses, a job I landed this summer, and a couple clubs I wanted to join. I decided that would keep me busy enough not to slack off, yet keep me rested enough to do my best and be prepared when I enroll in DC3 next fall.

It amazes me to hear that the KSDE doesn't see the obvious connection to English courses, Reading and Journalism. Journalism is practical experience, a bi-product if you will, of those courses. It also allows for creative expression in writing, photography and computer skills.

If there is a concern that our State test scores are low, take away Journalism, then see how our State tests scores do. I have no doubt; worsening in the very short term. More programs need to be introduced that help our children utilize what they are taught academically . Only then will we see if our efforts are productive; or not.

Our education system is more than a sports program. It is suppose to prepare our children to be productive. To have the ability to compete for scholarships and ultimately jobs. The ability to express, through the written word, is more important than any sports program. If we want our children to succeed, then we must give them the tools to do so.

Sports are wonderful on many levels. But how realistic is it to think that NFL contracts are going to feed the majority of our children, once they leave high school. But I can't think of any ambition where being able to express a thought through writing isn't imperative. College entrance essays and resumes are the groundwork to getting the education and jobs that will make it possible for our children live comfortable and successful lives. So those children who have the ability to read and write, and have had the practical experience in doing so, will no doubt go much further than those who don't.

Shame on the Board of Education for even suggesting that anything that utilizes academics be cut.
